Title Catalysis in uretdione powder coatings enables innovative processing lines
Date 04.04.2003
Number 11153
Abstract Urethane powder coatings based upon aliphatic or cycloaliphatic isocyanates and polyols are known for their outstanding properties like weathering resistance, superior flow properties and surface finish quality. However, using the emission free uretdione crosslinkers, curing temperatures of about 180°C up to 200 °C are necessary for complete crosslinking. Therefore the application of such powder coatings was strongly limited until recently. New catalysts were investigated which allow a reduction of curing temperatures below 150°C. For the catalyzed reaction between uretdiones and polyols, a reaction mechanism was proved, which was never observed in melt before. Besides the saving of energy in the curing process, the new curing mechanism enables the development of innovative processing lines like transforming of pre-coated aluminum sheet metals as well as the application of powder coatings on heat sensitive substrates like wood-based material. Both fields of application were tested using non-optimized powder coating model samples.

Crosslinking Materials and Processes
The 225th ACS National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, March 23-27, 2003
