Title Tuning of biocompatible thermo-sensitive polymer brushes by e-beam irradiation
Date 28.08.2009
Number 19293
Abstract Polymer brushes can be used to control adsorption mechanism e.g. protein adsorption. Those tethered polymer chains are sensitive to various factors like pH value, solvent or temperature. In combination with a second polymer mixed brushes are created which can switch their surface properties and therefore influence adsorption mechanisms of e.g. proteins. Focusing on temperature as external stimulus we chose PS-PNIPAAM mixed brushes to regulate the protein adsorption, where PNIPAAM deswells above its LCST of 32 °C. The PS brush, however, does not change. In a second approach we extend the control of surface modification by applying a dose gradient via electron irradiation. This technique enables additional local control of modification especially when generating a gradient or structures in the brush layer.
