PMSE 400 - The 232nd ACS National Meeting, San Francisco, CA, September 10-14, 2006

Very thin PNIPAAM brush films (< 20nm) grafted on Si wafers were analyzed by ATR-FTIR aiming at the swelling and deswelling properties for different ambient conditions. We could demonstrate the T-sensitive swelling of PNIPAAM fixed on the substrate and the influence of the solution salt concentration on the LCST. In future work the absorbance of the characteristic PNIPAAM bands will be used to quantify the swelling, even at low thicknesses, which will be supported by ellipsometric studies on the identical samples. Further investigations are dedicated to controlled protein adsorption in PBS at PNIPAAM brushes. Similar studies were made with end functionalized poly(2-vinylpyridine), which is a pH sensitive polymer, to be shown in further papers.
