Title Novel Supramolecular Approach to Periodic Nanostructures in Thin Polymer Films
Date 31.12.2003
Number 11520
Abstract Self-assembly in thin films of block copolymers results in ordered arrays of nanodomains with periodicity of 10-100 nm. It makes them promising candidates for potential applications in many fields of applied chemistry and materials science. We investigate microphase separation in thin (20-100 nm) films of BC assembles. Supramolecular BC assembles (SA) of PS-b-P4VP with 2-(4'-hydroxybenzeneazo)benzoic acid (HBA) are obtained due to hydrogen bonding between HBA and 4-vinylpyridine monomer. Depending on length of the blocks, thin films of SA show either lamellar or cylindrical morphology. Annealing of SA films in vapors of nonselective solvents leads to further improvement of the order in the system. Applied solvent can induce either parallel or normal to the substrate plane orientation of nanodomains. HBA can be easily removed from the SA film by convenient rinsing with selective solvent, i.e. methanol, giving an ordered array of the nanochannels.

Assembly and Applications of Soft Interfaces
The 226th ACS National Meeting, New York, NY, September 7-11, 2003
