Title Wettability and morphology of a mixed polymer brush prepared by simultaneous polymer addition
Date 31.12.2003
Number 11228
Abstract In this paper we report on the synthesis of a mixed polymer brush composed of polystyrene and poly(2-vinyl pyridine). A mixed brush of these two polymers may show the ability to switch interfacial properties and structure when exposed to differing solvents. The synthesis was done by a simultaneous deposition of the two polymers on the substrate from a common solution and annealing at elevated temperatures. We deposited a 50/50 blend of the two polymers at incremental levels of polymer concentration to determine particularities of the grafting. The synthesized mixed brushes were characterized by contact angle and scanning probe microscopy. It was shown that the brushes did exhibit switching by changing the wettability of the surface when exposed to different solvents. It was also determined that at elevated levels of polymer deposition P2VP predominantly was grafted and there was a limit to the amount of grafted polymer.
