IPF Joins Pioneering Project to Develop Next-Generation Personalized Pilot Helmets

IPF has joined forces with leading industry partners in the newly launched “MOPS” project, aiming to revolutionize the way pilot head protection systems are designed and manufactured. The initiative focuses on creating a sustainable, automatable, and modular production process for fully personalized helmets – delivering superior fit, functionality, and resource efficiency.

Unlike conventional mass-produced helmets in fixed shell sizes, MOPS pursues a made-to-measure approach that integrates comfort, safety, and advanced technical functions from the ground up. The project is supported by approximately €573,000 in funding from the Zentrales Innovationsprogramm Mittelstand (ZIM) – which stands for Central Innovation Programme for small and medium-sized enterprises.

As a key technology partner, IPF is developing novel curved 2.5D preform structures, together with a precisely tuned resin infusion and consolidation process. This expertise ensures that the helmets combine high structural performance with lightweight design and the ability to integrate functional elements directly into the composite structure.

IPF’s work is closely linked with MOUNTEK GmbH, which is developing innovative methods for embedding components such as cables and hoses into the preform using adapted stitching technologies. Alongside IPF and MOUNTEK, WOLFRAM Designers and Engineers are creating an ecologically and economically optimized modular design, while Autoflug GmbH is designing an ergonomic interior that adapts perfectly to the wearer’s head.
