Cluster Scalable Controlled Interfaces

What we do...

The Cluster „Scalable Controlled Interfaces“ at the Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden joins fundamental understanding of adhesion, wetting, friction and surface functionalization with applications in coatings technology. We focus on the up-scaling of innovative polymer materials and processes, including bio-based polymers, from lab to technological scale to create new responsive coatings in demonstrators with high application relevance. This includes e.g. adaptive easy-to-clean, anti-freeze, anti-fog and anti-fouling coatings as well as functional adhesives and barrier layers. By developing resource-efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to conventional coating systems and applications in the areas of energy technologies and environmental protection, the cluster contributes actively to the solution of current problems in economy and society.

The combination of fundamental research and application in the area of interfacial design makes the cluster unique in the national research landscape. In close cooperation with partners from industries as well as universites and non-university research facilities, specific functional layers matching the application profile are designed, prepared, tested and analyzed in the lab. Subsequently they are up-scaled and integrated into new or existing technological systems. This is closely connected to the scaling of coating technologies for novel polymer systems together with cooperation partners from industry, including process support.
