The Lightweight Design group focuses on the structural design and optimization of fiber-reinforced composite components for highly loaded lightweight structures. In doing so, structural and product-design requirements are considered together to develop load-adapted and at the same time manufacturable solutions.

Areas of focus

• Load-appropriate design strategies: Targeted alignment of geometry, fiber architecture, and material distribution to the specific application and boundary conditions
• Structural optimization using numerical methods to improve performance with efficient material usage
• Integration of optimization approaches with manufacturing technologies, such as Tailored Fiber Placement (TFP) and Filament Winding (FW)
• Explicit consideration of manufacturing constraints to enable practical, high-performance lightweight structures
