This cover depicts the molecular architecture of an “Olympic gel” built from mechanically interlocked plasmids. The ring-shaped DNA molecules can reversibly open and close through diversified lock-and-key domains, allowing programmable formation of mechanical bonds. The study demonstrates how combinatorial synthetic biology can create compositionally complex soft materials with unusual topological architectures and distinctive physical properties.
