Numerical simulation of polymers and composites

Material characterization and simulation are closely connected. For the creation of a suitable simulation model, a characterization of the material properties is necessary. In our reasearch group for material characterization, we have a large number of possibilities to determine the material behavior both macroscopically and microscopically. In order to check whether the calculated simulation results show a good agreement with the real behavior of the component, the results are validated with part tests. For our simulations, we not only use the extensive model databases of our commercial software, but also in-house developed material models, as well as micromechanical models with complex geometries.

In the materials characterization group we have commercial licenses for the simulation software Abaqus as well as ANSYS. With their extensive material databases, many problem areas can already be covered. If the existing material models are not sufficient, we develop special user routines for the calculation of individual use cases and automated model generators for complex model geometries via Python and Fortran.

  • Simulation of the long-term resistance of IR-welded short fibre reinforced plastics
  • Simulation of the irreversible deformation behavior of semicrystalline thermoplasts
  • Characterization and FE-modelling of the moisture-dependent material behaviour of polyamides
