Department Tailored Lightweight Composites

Research Focus

The Tailored Lightweight Composites department develops and investigates high-performance multifunctional fiber-reinforced composites with locally varying meso- and macro-scale structures for structural lightweight applications. The focus lies on load- and application-appropriate composite concepts in which fiber architecture and matrix properties are spatially tailored to adjust the mechanical and functional behavior of components.

Within the department, design strategies, numerical methods, and manufacturing processes such as Tailored Fiber Placement, Filament Winding, and Tailored Matrix Placement are integrated into coherent process chains. Experimental investigations, process-near characterization, and simulation-based approaches provide the basis for the development of tailored composite structures, ranging from fundamental research to application-oriented demonstrators.
