Title Synthesis of titania shell on polystyrene core with tunable thickness
Date 16.05.2007

Abstract POLY 344 - General Papers and Segmented Block Copolymers

In this study, we report on the synthesis and characterisation of PS-TiO2 composite particles with core-shell morphology. Polystyrene beads with narrow particle size distribution, were prepared by the surfactant free emulsion polymerisation and fuctionalised with ß-diketone groups. Precipitation of TiO2 nanoparticles from Ti(OEt)4 salt was carried out on the surface of these fuctionalised polystyrene beads in basic reaction conditions. Interaction between the Ti+2 precursors, generated in the reaction media and ß-diketone groups is the driving force for the precipitation of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surface of polymeric templates. This method offers the flexibility of changing the thickness of TiO2 shell and hence TiO2 content of composite particles by varying the concentration of Ti(OEt)4 salt in reaction media. Morphology of polymeric composite particles was characterised by SEM and ZnO content was determined by TGA. These composite particles can be used as building blocks in fabrication of optoelectronic devices.
