Abstract Free radical copolymerization of styrene (Sty), 2-vinylnaphthalene (2VN), 9-vinylanthracene (9VA) and 4-vinylbenzoic acid (VBA) has been reported. Besides quaternary copolymer Sty-VBA-2VN-9VA, copolymer Sty-VBA has been prepared from the mixture containing Sty, VBA, initiator and TEMPO. Detection of the amount of 2VN and 9VA, which have been introduced to the polymer chain in the polymerization process has been performed by using the difference between the absorptions of both prepared copolymers in comparison to the absorption of 2-ethylnaphthalene and 9-methylanthracene as model compounds. The amount of VBA bounded into polymer chain has been found by titration of carboxyl group. Concentration of Sty, VBA, 2VN and 9VA in reaction mixture and determined concentration of corresponding fragments in copolymer have been compared. It has been found that copolymer contains about 30 times less of 9VA, about 10 times less of 2VN and comparable amount of VBA which have been introduced into reaction. According to the GPC data, the determined molecular weight distributions have been equal to 1.09 and 1.16 for quaternary copolymer and copolymer Sty-VBA, respectively.
