Title Scale-up of an on-line process monitoring system to an industrial extruder to determine the concentration and the dispersion of polymer nanocomposites

Abstract We show the scale-up of on-line monitoring methods to an industrial extruder for the production of polypropylene/layered silicates nanocomposites to determine dispersion and concentration of the nanofiller during extrusion and to check the influence of the processing conditions on the properties of the nanocomposites. The on-line methods used were near infrared spectroscopy (NIR), ultrasonic measurements (US) and laser extinction measurements (LE). The on-line measurements were correlated with off-line measurements by multivariate data analysis. We determined the concentration and the degree of exfoliation as an indicator for dispersion of the layered silicates quantitatively and studied the influence of different processing conditions on the exfoliation behaviour.
