Title Interaction forces between end-grafted polyelectrolyte brushes and colloidal particles
Date 09.10.2009
Number 19442
Abstract Focus of this work are the interaction forces between an end-grafted poly(acrylic acid) brush and colloidal particles (SiO2, polystyrene) in electrolyte solutions. They are measured using the AFM colloidal probe technique. In order to elucidate the influence of the electrical properties of the colloidal particle, spheres with different isoelctric points (SiO2, polystyrene) were used. The interaction force shows a strong dependence of the interaction on the pH value. At one hand, the dissociation and swelling of the brush causes a steric and electrostatic repulsion whose range increases with increasing pH. On the other hand, differences in the sign of the surface charge of polystyrene and poly(acrylic acid) in the pH range between the isoelectric points of the two materials lead to a strong attractive force.
