Title Grafting of poly(3-hexylthiophene) from poly(4-bromostyrene) films by kumada catalyst-transfer polycondensation (KCTP)

Abstract While surface initiated polymerization is a major tool for the preparation of various kinds of polymer brushes, it can be applied for polymers obtainable by polyadditions and thus is not suitable for the grafting-from of conductive polymers accessible by polycondensations. Recently we developed a novel surface initiated polycondensation to selectively (no polymer is formed in solution) graft regioregular HT poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) from photo-cross-linked poly(4-bromostyrene) films pre-activated with Ni(PPh3)4 catalyst (Kiriy, A. et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 6626). We found that the grafting proceeds not only from the topmost layer of the PS(Br) film, but also takes place deeply inside the PS(Br) matrix resulting into a kind of interpenetrated network in which relatively short (~10 nm) P3HT grafts emanate from PS(Br) chains. The films show good stability against delamination, high conductivity and high swellability that might be useful for plastic electronic devices, sensors, or novel stimuli-responsive materials.
