Title In-situ modification of unmodified montmorillonite in polypropylene by electron-induced reactive processing
Date 13.04.2012
Number 29984
Abstract The potential of electron-induced reactive processing for the in situ modification of unmodified montmorillonite (MMT) is described. During melt mixing process, energy and negative electron charges are absorbed in the polypropylene-unmodified MMT composite in the presence of a chemical coupling agent. The total amount of absorbed electron charges, the absorbed dose, and the pH-dependent charges developed on the MMT edges play a significant role in the in situ modification of MMT. The proposed chemical mechanism behind the in situ modification of MMT in the presence of vinyl silane as coupling additive is described in detail. Finally, a speculative sketch is described to explain the influence of pH-dependent charges on the modification of MMT.
