Title Ex situ initiated kumada catalyst-transfer polycondensation
Date 12.09.2011

Abstract We report a convenient one-step preparation of nickel initiators, Ar-Ni(L)-Br, for<br />chain-growth Kumada catalyst-transfer polycondensation (KCTP) via monotransmetalation (TM1) of commercially available, air/moisture stable Ni(L)Cl2 and easily available sterically hindered Grignard compounds (Ar-MgBr). In order for Grignard precursors to be suitable for the preparation of KCTP initiators, an alkyl substituent should be present at the a-position to the magnesium atom, to prevent an unwanted second transmetalation (TM2) to form Ar-Ni(dppe)-Ar and further formation of Ar-Ar homocoupling products. The KCTP of 2-bromo-5-chloromagnesio-3-hexylthiophene initiated by Ar-Ni(L)-Br leads to the corresponding aryl-terminated poly(3-hexylthiophene)s with high initiation efficiencies. The extension to initiators with electronic functionality demonstrates the versatility and generality of this concept. We will further highlight our resent results obtained in development of chain-growth KCTP.
