PMSE 398 - The 232nd ACS National Meeting, San Francisco, CA, September 10-14, 2006

We report fabrication of microsyringes and microchannels made on the base of supported and free-standing self-rolled polymer microtubes. Rolling is due to unequal swelling of chemically distinct polymers, forming the top and the bottom layers of the film, in selective solvents. The length of the tubes and their position on the substrate are defined by a set of directing openings in the polymer film. The tubes are connected to external fluid reservoirs by glass microcapillaries inserted into the tubes or by syringe needles. The inner walls of the tubes can be chemically functionalized prior to rolling by a variety of surface modification methods. The microtubes with functionalized inner walls and the microsyringes can find applications as sensor elements, microreactors, cell-surgery tools.
