Self-healing Materials

Our activities on self-healing Materials are directed at improving the functional characteristics of rubbers. Because of continuous mechanical stress, rubber materials are exposed to permanent wear. Insofar, it is obvious to improve their life time by utilizing principles of self-healing. Our concept comprises utilization of non-covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding and ionic interactions, which lead to cure of nano and micro cracks in case of damage. Here, it is important to achieve the correct balance between covalent and non-covalent interactions in the rubber material. The investigations are carried out in close cooperation with the department Elastomers in our institute.
