Online structure characterisation during deformation and fracture of polymers

To investigate the correlation between mechanical properties and structural changes in polymer materials a special procedure was developed.

The deformation and fracture are pinpoined at a well defined position of the specimen by a special specimen geometry, the waisted specimen. The dimensions of the specimen can be scaled.

The local deformation is estimated by a grating technique [ARAMIS, GOM]

The local structure is estimated by (scanning) SAXS and WAXS. To get sufficient intensity resp. rates the measurements were performed mainly at synchrotron radiation sources

In the following there are shown 3 pattern as well as the evaluated cord distribution functions of iPP at 55 degree. Always shown before defomation, during yielding (local shear deformation) and strain hardening
