The production of chemically coupled polyetheretherketon polytetrafluoroethylene materials (PEEK-PTFE-cg) by reactive extrusion is described in this contribution and the essential tribo-mechanical properties of this new compound material are presented. A modified high performance material with a stable morphology during processing especially for tribological applications could be manufactured by the chemical coupling and compatibilization of PTFE particles in a PEEK matrix. Compared to physically mixed PEEK/PTFE blends a homogeneous breakdown and distribution of the PTFE in the PEEK matrix as well as a compatibilization of the incompatible materials are realized. The PEEK-PTFE-cg morphology is in the melt also without shearing strains sufficiently processing-stable, which is a basic requirement for the subsequent production of fiber materials in a melt spinning process. In comparison with non-modified PEEK these materials show obvious enhanced tribological properties and exhibit a more robust failure behavior presented by higher values of notched impact strength.
