EXIST Research Transfer Project: “ResCure - Anti-inflammatory hydrogel products for radically novel, highly effective and economically advantageous therapies”

Funded by the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWi) and the European Union through the European Social Fund (ESF).

Inflammatory processes are immune responses to injury or pathological changes that serve to limit damage to the organism and prepare for tissue healing. However, excessive or chronic inflammation can severely and irreversibly damage the organism itself, manifesting itself in conditions such as arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and chronic skin wounds. Currently, inflammatory reactions can usually only be treated by systemic medication, which often causes severe side effects and/or has limited effectiveness. The ResCure team, four researchers from the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden e.V. and a business economist with experience in the life sciences, is striving to bring a novel technology into use that causally resolves inflammatory processes with the help of special polymer hydrogels without the use of bioactive substances. The hydrogels act as a "molecular sponge" that absorbs the inflammatory signal molecules from the tissue and inactivates them.

As part of the project, the team will focus on the production and validation of a hydrogel-coated wound dressing for the treatment of chronic skin wounds. For this purpose, the material production will first be established by a certified (pilot) process including the technical documentation while fulfilling the regulatory requirements. Subsequently, a "first in man" study for the treatment of venous skin ulcers with a duration of about two years will be conducted.
