Abstract
|
Atomic force microscopy and scanning thermal microscopy was used to understand the microstructure and physical properties of the poly(styrene-co-2,3,4.5.6-pentafluorostyrene) (PSF) and polymethylacrylate (PMA) binary brush layer grafted onto silicon substrates via a grafting from approach. Here, we report results of fabricating dense PSF and PMA homopolymer brush layers as well as environmentally adaptive binary brushes that demonstrate complete reversible switching of states upon quick exposure to different solvents. Furthermore, very little experimental work has been carried out to determine physical properties of brushes. We address this issue by obtaining direct experimental results of the elastic and thermal properties, and measuring the thermo-elastic response of thin polymer brush layers.

Polymer Brushes: From Synthesis to Functional Microstructures
The 225th ACS National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, March 23-27, 2003
