A stable dense layer of a graft poly(ethylene glycol) on the surface of silicon oxide was obtained using a two-stage method previously developed by the authors. The kinetics of poly(ethylene glycol) grafting onto a layer of random styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer preliminarily adsorbed on the surface of silicon oxide was studied by null ellipsometry. The effects of the polymer molecular mass and its concentration in solution, the catalyst concentration, and the process temperature on the thickness of a poly(ethylene glycol) layer were estimated by the methods of atomic force microscopy and X-ray reflectometry. Using the contact angle technique, inversion of the hydrophilicity-hydrophobicity properties of the surface of poly(ethylene glycol) upon sample immersion into a hydrophilic or hydrophobic medium, respectively, was discovered. The mechanism of poly(ethylene glycol) grafting onto the styrene-maleic acid copolymer was studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy using a model system. The quantitative relationships obtained for the model system supported the advanced mechanism and allowed qualitative description of the kinetics of poly(ethylene glycol) grafting. It was established that the kinetics of poly(ethylene glycol) grafting onto the styrene-maleic acid copolymer is determined by the joint contribution of diffusion and kinetic factors, among them the kinetics of chemical interaction between the functional groups of the reacting polymers.
