Leibniz Research Alliance “Advanced Materials Safety” Enters Second Funding Phase
The supra-regional Leibniz Research Alliance “Advanced Materials Safety” (AMS), coordinated by the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research (IPF) and the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), has been approved for a second funding phase.
Leibniz Research Alliances bring together the expertise of multiple Leibniz institutes to address cross-cutting topics of strategic relevance to science and society through long-term collaboration. The AMS alliance comprises 12 institutes, covering a broad spectrum from materials science and analytical research to environmental health, data science, and science communication. From April 1, 2026, the consortium will continue its work on safe and sustainable materials, with a particular focus on advancing integrated approaches to materials design.
During its initial funding phase, AMS established a strong foundation for interdisciplinary collaboration and developed a framework for integrating safety considerations early in the materials design process. At the same time, it became evident that a focus on safety alone does not fully capture the broader impacts of materials on human health and the environment. There is a growing need to develop materials that are not only non-toxic, but also energy- and resource-efficient, and that exhibit a predictably safe life cycle. In its second phase, AMS will therefore further advance materials design approaches that systematically address potential adverse effects throughout the materials’ life cycle.
