Overview of the composites group at UFRGS focusing on pressure vessels (materials, processing and software)
Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels (COPVs) are widely recognized for characteristics like high strength-to-weight ratio, toughness, and weather resistance. Their overall improved performance over metals is driving a growing worldwide demand across applications such as CNG and hydrogen cylinders for vehicles, and gas transportation. Although COPVs have been used in many countries for over two decades, they have not yet entered the Brazilian market. This seminar will highlight the main outcomes of a project coordinated at UFRGS focusing on COPVs Type IV, encompassing their manufacturing via filament winding using glass-fibers and carbon-fibers as well as their preliminary design through both analytical (software development) and numerical approaches. The seminar will also address the in-house development of towpregs used by the FW process.
