The combination of science, especially polymer chemistry, and engineering is the basis for a successful research in the weldline of both disciplines. Chemists and engineers work together and solve problems in the region from fundamental up to applied research. The department has the following main fields of work:
Reactions in melt/melt modification - degradation, condensation, grafting and block copolymer formation in melt by reactive extrusion, starting in lab investigations, e. g. polyamides (polyolefine-graft polyamides, branched polyamides, PTFE-polyamide block copolymers, chemically bonded PTFE elastomer, PTFE thermoplastics and PTFE duromers).
Thermo-controlled reactions in melt - using well known chemical reactions in a new combination to form thermo-controlled branched and/or cured resin systems (catalyzed and noncatalyzed) like powder coatings and chemically curable resins.
Reactive processing technologies - activation of polymers by reactive extrusion for using in interfacial-reactive injection molding processes for improvement the bond strength in the interface by formation of chemical bonds. In the polyamide-TPU system the connection between the components are excellent - the delamination does not take place in the interface or weldline region, the destroying is observed as a cohesion break in one of the matrix materials beside the interface
Membranes - using melt modified polymers as membrane materials or as modified basis for the membrane formation with defined polyelectrolyte complexes for water purification; synthesis of block copolymer membrane materials for fuel cells
