Professor José Paulo Farinha Appointed IPF Fellow
On September 1, 2026, Professor José Paulo Farinha was appointed an IPF Fellow.
Farinha is Full Professor of Physical- Chemistry, Materials and Nanosciences in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal. His research focuses on the intersection of functional nanomaterials and polymers, with a particular interest in their interaction with light.
In collaboration with the IPF, Farinha will work on the development of photonic colorimetric sensors based on self-assembled polymer nanoparticles with a compact core and a stimuli-responsive polymer shell. These systems are designed to generate well-defined, stimuli-induced color changes that can report local microenvironmental conditions without the need for wiring or an external power supply.
The collaboration also includes the joint supervision of a doctoral candidate, further expanding the scientific exchange between the IPF and the Instituto Superior Técnico while also supporting the training of young researchers in the field.
The IPF Fellowship provides a framework for strengthening scientific collaboration with internationally recognized scientists in strategically important research fields. Fellows are appointed for two years, with the possibility of two reappointments.
