Colloquium: Prof. Debajyoti Ghoshal, "Strategic design of metal organic frameworks for different applications in polymer systems"

ABSTRACT

Metal organic frameworks (MOF) are special class of coordination polymers, which become a hot area of research in the field of hybrid materials science; due to their versatile structural features, high surface area, and uniform porosities with predesigned molecular dimensions. Such attractive structural properties make them extremely useful in state-of-the art material research for various functional applications particularly in gas storage, separation, sensing, proton conductivity and many more. Our exploration with some newly synthesized MOFs are focused on, that are showing unique application potential in selective CO2 sorption, hydrogen storage, sensing using the structural flexibility; so on and so forth. Recently, we have explored that the designed MOFs also exhibit excellent proton/ion conduction behavior making them suitable for fuel cell membrane design. Interestingly, when some of the MOFs are mixed with some soluble, biocompatible, cost-effective polymers like polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP); the mixed matrix shows a significantly improved proton conductivity which is suitable for their practical use as a sustainable fuel cell membrane.
