Title Carbon nanotube filled polycarbonate composites produced by melt mixing and their use in blends

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNT) containing polymer composites have attracted much attention due to their high stiffness, high strength, and good electrical conductivity at relatively low CNT contents. In this study, composites of polycarbonate (PC) with multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWNT) of varying amounts were prepared by diluting a PC based masterbatch containing 15 wt% MWNT using melt mixing in a DACA-Micro Compounder (4g scale). Electrical resistivity measurements indicated percolation of MWNT between 1 and 1.5 wt%. Atomic Force Microscopy was used to characterize the state of MWNT dispersion indicating no preferred orientation in extrusion direction. In addition, blends of PC filled with 2 wt% MWNT and PE have been prepared. Conductivity of the blends could be achieved in compositions down to 40 vol% filled PC in which the total MWNT content was only 0.54 vol%. These blends exhibited co-continuous structures wherein the nanotubes appear to bridge the phases.<br /><br />Advances in Polycarbonates<br />The 225th ACS National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, March 23-27, 2003
