New IPF Fellow Professor Sandro C. Amico

On September 12, 2025, Professor Sandro C. Amico was appointed as IPF Fellow.

Sandro Amico is Professor of Materials Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil, where he leads the Composites and Nanocomposites Research Group. He has been closely collaborating with IPF researchers for many years on advanced manufacturing and performance enhancement of polymer composites.

Joint projects include the development of hybrid manufacturing processes combining filament winding and tailored fiber placement to improve the crashworthiness of composite structures, the integration of Fiber Bragg Grating sensors for real-time structural health monitoring of pressure vessels, and the optimization of filament-wound components reinforced with TFP patches. These initiatives combine experimental and numerical approaches and have significantly advanced the understanding of stress distribution, mechanical performance, and failure behavior in composites.

A key aspect of this partnership has been the active exchange of researchers and students between UFRGS and IPF, fostering training, joint publications, and long-term networks for future innovation in composite technologies.

The IPF Fellowship aims to strengthen the visibility of the institute’s research through international collaboration and exchange with leading scientists. We are very pleased to welcome Professor Sandro Amico as IPF Fellow and look forward to further expanding our successful cooperation.
