POLY 237 - NMR Spectroscopy of Polymers

The electrostatic interaction plays a critical role in adsorption and formation of complexes The charge of molecules is determine In an electrophoresis experiment a charge molecule is determined in a combination of diffusion and electrophoresis NMR. The effective charge determined that way is significantly lower than the nominal charge because of counterion condensation. The influence of ionic strength and dielectric permittivity on the effective charge has been studied for poly(styrene sulfonate). The effective charge decreases with increasing ionic strength and decreasing dielectric constant. Both cases result in a more coiled polymer. It has been shown, binding of small molecules like glutamic acid on polyelectrolytes (PDADMAC) is purely electrostatic.
