Abstract Cellulose: a renewable and reinforcing filler for elastomers. Spherical and fibrous cellulose types in comparison to conventional fillers:

The studied spherical and fibrous Tencel (R) cellulose types are reinforcing fillers in elastomers and can be considered as environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil raw materials. Compared to the pure filler, the partial replacement of carbon black or silica with both types of celluloses a significantly lower Mooney viscosity can be achieved, which ensures energy-efficient processing during the mixing process. The use of fibrous cellulose type allows much higher reinforcement at lower filler degrees compared to conventional fillers. In applying the spherical cellulose as the exclusive filler or through partial replacement of conventional fillers, the loss factor tan 5 at 0 degrees C can be increased (improved wet skid behavior of tire tread compounds) as well as lowered simultaneously at 60 degrees C (decreased rolling resistance).
