Abstract Halogen free flame retardancy mechanisms in polymers often operate via surface layer building processes based on dehydration and charring resulting in suppression of the combustion cycle. Through synchronous polymer cross-linking reactions the formation of the barrier can be promoted and the required quantity of flame retardant reduced. This saves costs and improves the properties of the polymer.
