Title Incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles into poly(methylmethacrylate) matrix by solution mixing
Date 08.04.2008
Number 15598
Abstract We report on the mixing of ZnO nanoparticles into the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix by solution mixing using N,N-dimethylacetamide as common solvent. ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized by hydrolysis of Zn(Ac)2O.2H2O in 2-propanol and PMMA-ZnO composite films were prepared by film casting at 80°C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed a good dispersion of ZnO nanoparticles in PMMA matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated the improvement in thermal stability of polymer matrix after mixing of ZnO nanoparticles. UV-VIS spectra of nanocomposite films revealed an onset of absorption in the range of 340-346 nm, characteristic of ZnO nanoparticles. The obtained PMMA-ZnO films are transparent and can be used as UV filter materials.
