Abstract
|
Following the ever-growing problem of non-degradable polymer materials, the quest for (bio)degradable polymers has gained considerable traction over the past decade. Being the only radical polymerization to produce either polyesters or polythioesters as degradable polymers, radical ring-opening polymerization (RROP) of different cyclic monomers, has seen notable advances over the past 10–15 years. The ability to form (bio)degradable polymers on their own but also as copolymers with vinylic monomers is what makes this RROP chemistry unique. This chapter takes a closer look at the reported monomers, their synthesis, the reaction mechanism of RROP, how to circumvent pitfalls in side reactions and also a deep dive into the techniques available to polymerize these monomers. Being often mentioned as a polymerization that produces materials for the biomedical sector, this particular field of application will also be discussed using the available data from recent publications. Since RROP is viewed as contributor toward a sustainable future, this part is also covered in here. Altogether, this chapter takes a detailed look at RROP to provide a holistic and detailed overview on the current state of research.
