The main topic of research of the Functional Nanocomposites and Blends (NB) department is the generation and investigation of multifunctional polymeric materials with nanoscaled fillers, especially those based on carbon. Tailor-made structure generation and stabilization of the nanofillers in single- and multi-phase polymers are the focus of our department. Chemical reactions and/or physical interactions at the interface contribute strongly to these materials, and our studies include modification of the nanofiller surface. Along with studies on the multifunctional properties of nanocomposites and blends, we aim particularly for the introduction of sensor properties for liquid leakage and deformation detection with the carbon-based nanofillers. Sensor properties are quantified using changes in electrical resistivity caused by these environmental stimuli. Furthermore, current work focuses on thermoelectric and electromagnetic shielding properties of conductive composites.
