The German Research Foundation (DFG) will support Dr. Ralf Helbig over the next three years through his project „Antifouling surfaces with spatially alternating interfacial properties". With his collaborators Prof. Christian Hannig (Uniklinikum Dresden) and Prof. Matthias Hannig (Uniklinikum Homburg), he will work on a comprehensive understanding of bio-adhesion processes at surfaces with spatially alternating physico-chemical interfacial properties, such as periodic structures, alternating surface free energies, and alternating elasticities, covering lateral dimensions from the micro- to the nanoscale. Adsorption of biomolecules and bacterial adhesion on respective substrates will be analysed in vitro, but also in situ in the human oral cavity. Congratulations!

Laboratory experiments provide clues on how repair processes of the brain could be promoted in Alzheimer’s disease. The studies are based on a new model system that uses human stem cells and biohybrid polymer hydrogels. Dresden (Germany) July 2, 2018 – Scientists in Dresden, Germany, have been successful in mimicking mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease in a novel, stem cell-based model system that reproduces features of human brain tissue. This experimental tool can be used to study mechanisms of pathology and help to find new therapeutic approaches, the researchers say. Their results, published in the journal ‘Developmental Cell’, indicate that modulating the immune system can trigger neuronal repair processes and thus possibly help the brain to better cope with Alzheimer’s. The study involved the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (IPF), the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden at the TU Dresden (CRTD) and further institutions from Germany and abroad.
