Title Green synthesis of Ag nanoparticles with uncommon behaviour towards NaBH4 in presence of Congo red using polyelectrolyte multilayers containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose

Abstract Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are studied for their dye degradation properties. Herein, we investigate the synthesis of AgNPs using layer-by-layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte films based on poly(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) deposited on silica microparticles. The characteristics of composite microparticles were investigated as a function of polyelectrolyte and NaCl concentrations in the deposition solutions by FTIR spectroscopy and potentiometric titrations. The synthesis of AgNPs by various LbL matrices was studied by UV–vis spectroscopy, showing that only the films constructed in presence of NaCl were capable to reduce AgNO3 to AgNPs. The average diameter of AgNPs increased slightly with reaction time until approximately 120–130·nm after 2·h reaction time and the lowest diameter was obtained at 5·×·10-3 mol/L AgNO3. Unlike other AgNPs which degrade dyes in presence of NaBH4, we showed that the AgNPs synthesized by PDMAEMA/CMC multilayer films possess a linear spectroscopic response to NaBH4 in the concentration range 10-4 mol/L to 10-2mol/L in presence of Congo red. The novelty of this study consists in the catalytically active LbL films for green synthesis of AgNPs which can be obtained using specific polysaccharides (such as CMC) as building-blocks for multilayers assembly.
