Title New polymers: Beautiful structures, but how can we bring them to the market?
Date 06.03.2017

Abstract Fantastic Plastics—the title of a news feature by Mark Peplow in Nature (August 2016)—motivates this critical reflection on the current situation, and especially the future of polymers in academic research and industrial use. Nobody in our academic polymer community doubts that polymers are the materials of the 21st century, and will continue to enable and drive the development of future technologies, and ensure our high standard of living and wellbeing in the context of both an aging population and the energy transformation. Fully convinced, we all write this as the motivation behind our publications and proposals. However, we should be aware that there is a difference between polymers, with a focus on the macromolecular structure, and plastics which generally describes the polymer materials in application. The use of the term plastics has a significant implication: the larger-scale use of new polymer concepts and successful transfer into the market, and here some thoughtful analysis seems appropriate.
