The kinetics and equilibrium adsorption of the random styrene-maleic anhydride (1:1) copolymer were studied by zero ellipsometry. The adsorption of this copolymer can be represented as a two-regime process consisting of fast and slow stages. At the first stage, copolymer macromolecules diffusing from a solution are adsorbed on a free surface, thus leading to the formation of an initially loose monolayer composed of almost unperturbed macromolecular coils. At the slow stage of adsorption, other copolymer macromolecules penetrate into the formed adsorption layer and a dense monolayer is formed. In accordance with this model, a kinetic equation was proposed which adequately describes the entire process of adsorption. The analysis of parameters obtained from the experiment demonstrates that the amount of the copolymer in the dense monolayer is five- or sixfold greater than that in a loose monolayer. This is possible due to the compression of polymer coils in the direction parallel to the adsorption plane and, hence, due to their extension along the normal to the solid surface or (and) their noticeable overlapping.
