Abstract POLY 205 - General Papers: Synthesis and Characterization <br /><br />Self-stratification, principally driven by the difference in the surface energies between different components, has been proven to be a useful strategy to achieve a fluorine-enriched surface of organic materials. In this way, very hydrophobic surfaces can be produced by only small amounts of fluorine content. Over the past decade, a number of polymers with perfluoroalkyl groups in the main chain or on the side chain have been reported in the literature. Among them, perfluoroalkyl end-capped polymers have received much attention due to their ease of synthesis, low surface energies, low friction coefficients and non-stick behavior. A better understanding of structure - property - relationship is essential to develop new materials with low energy surfaces. In recent studies, the influence of the crystallinity degree, interchain interaction, molecular weight, glass transition temperature, melting point, and length of perfluoroalkyl segment on the drastic alteration of the degree of fluorine enrichment on the surface was shown . In this paper, we report on the investigation of the surface properties of semi-crystalline poly(butylene isophthalate)s (LsPN-F7) with end-capped perfluoroalkyl groups (C7F15) (Figure 1). Their fluorine content varied over the range of 0 wt.-% to 9.14 wt.-%. Different from other fluorinated groups reported previously, the perfluoroalkyl end group in our studies contains an amide group, which can form an interchain H-bonding, and thus an influence of the self-stratification of the perfluoroalkyl end-capped LsPN-F7 on the top of the surface is expected.
