Abstract Definition: Natural rubber is produced from the latex of the Hevea Brasiliensis tree (or from other plant sources). It mainly consists of cis-1,4-polyisoprene. After compounding and vulcanization, it finds use in various applications, e.g., automotive tires, owing to its outstanding mechanical and tear properties. Frequently, also the vulcanized material is referred to as natural rubber.

Natural rubber is one of the most important green polymers. Despite all improvements made in the synthesis of elastomers, it still shares 40 % of the elastomers market. A brief overview of key properties is given in Table 1.

Encyclopedia of Polymeric Nanomaterials
ISBN 978-3-642-29647-5
