Abstract

The design of uniformly coated hybrid core-shell particles is of great interest because of their diverse applicability as building blocks for photonic crystals, fabrication of nano- and micro porous structured materials with multi-scale roughness or protective coatings with hydrophobic or superhydrophobic properties. Particularly interesting properties can be expected from asymmetrically coated particles i.e. the particles whose surface chemical composition differs on two sides. These particles are often called Janus particles and were introduced by de Gennes for the first time. JPs demonstrate enormous potential as drug-carriers, emulsion stabilizers, micro-rheological probes and functional elements for design of electronic paper. Moreover, due to asymmetrical structures, the JPs are able to aggregate into fascinating hierarchical structures, thereby, forming the building blocks for complex superstructures.
A particularly interesting group of JPs are those responding to changing environmental conditions. For example, immobilization of stimuli-responsive polymers to one side of colloidal silica particles was recently used for synthesis of temperature/pH sensitive Janus particles. Apparently, grafting of two polymers (polymer brushes) with different sensitivities on opposite sides can further diversify responsive properties of JPs.
In this work, we report on the design and stimuli-responsive properties of smart anisotropic Janus beads. Additional example of the responsive hybrid particles decorated with polymer brushes will be given on the example of uniformly coated hydrogel cross-linked microcapsules.
