Title Polypropylene-g-polystyrene Graft Copolymers by Combining ATRP, Carbocationic and Metallocene Chemistries

Abstract For compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends typically block or graft copolymers are used. To act as compatibilizer one of the structural units must be miscible with one blend component, the other with the other blend component. Most widely studied are AB or ABA block copolymers as compatibilizers, however, in practice mainly graft copolymers are used. In this work the preparation of well-defined polypropylene-gpolystyrene graft copolymers (PP-g-PSt) and studying the correlation between microstructure and compatibilization efficiency were aimed at. Well-defined PP-g-PSt copolymers were synthesized with macromonomer technique by Arnold et al., which involved the metallocene catalyzed copolymerization of propylene and anionically polimerized allyl-terminated (Mn = 4,000 g/mol) or norbornenyl-terminated (Mn = 700-18,000 g/mol) polystyrene (PSt) macromonomers. Several anionically polymerized PSt macromonomers were also tested in metallocene catalyzed ethylene copolymerization. However, these studies do not report on either the effect of substantial parameters, such as molecular weight of the macromonomer, type of metallocene catalyst, temperature, propylene (or ethylene) pressure, on the copolymerization behavior, the composition and molecular weight of the resulting grafts, or on the blending efficiency of PP-g-PSt graft copolymers in polypropylene/polystyrene blends.
