Abstract POLY 538 - Efficient Chemical Transformations in Polymer Chemistry: Click Chemistry and Beyond

The synthesis of an acetylene functionalized NMP initiator is described that is applicable to prepare polymers of adjustable molecular weight and low polydispersity. By click chemistry these polymers can be easily and efficiently post-modified to introduce a set of functionalities to the end group under mild conditions. Furthermore, the modular synthesis of diblock copolymers by linking two predefined polymeric fragments via a click reaction is demonstrated. In addition, we would like to report on the synthesis of reactive, segmented diblock copolymers that are prone to click chemistry. These macromolecules represent an ideal starting point for the modular synthesis of novel polymeric materials by effective side group modifications. Potential applications of such diblock copolymers can be found in the developing field of nanostructured thin films by combining the phase separation tendency of that type of block copolymers with effective side group modification which may allow to create highly functionalized nanoscopic devices.
