Title Physics and Engineering of Reinforced Elastomers: From Molecular Mechanisms to Industrial Applications

Abstract The paper focuses on various mechanisms of rubber reinforcement by active fillers and relates it to the specific properties of high performance elastomer goods. In particular, an analysis of filler flocculation and clustering on nanoscopic and mesoscopic length scales is presented. It demonstrates how the use of fractal geometry gives some quantitative insight into the morphology of filler networks. Based on this analysis, a scaling approach for the variation of the small strain modulus with filler concentration is described and a recently developed micro-mechanical material model of stress softening and filler induced hysteresis of reinforced rubbers, considering the breakdown and reaggregation of filler clusters, is briefly reviewed. Simulations obtained with the model show fair agreement with experimental stressstrain data. Finally, some basic results for crack propagation in non-linear, filled elastomer materials are presented.
