Abstract Functional dendritic polymers with emphasis on bioactive interactions increasingly draw the interest of the macromolecular community. These biosystems are characterized by highly complex composition, including self-assembled polymers, the ability to complex drugs and responsiveness against external stimuli. This complexity has to be considered when developing effective biomaterial. Yet, for most biopolymer systems standard analytical methods provide non-quantitative parameters, without information on the distribution of the components, which is essential for physiological applications. The need for detailed analysis of bioactive macromolecules led to the development of novel physicochemical approaches with high application potential. Asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AF4) is considered a smooth separation technique with a variety of hyphenation possibilities suitable for this purpose. AF4 in combination with complementary techniques such as microscopy and simulations can additionally give essential quantitative details on the systems composition and its responsiveness.

Recent Progress in Separation of Macromolecules and Particulates : Symposium on Recent Progress in Separation of Macromolecules and Particulates / 253rd National American-Chemical-Society Meeting
ISBN 978-0-8412-3309-6
