Title Poly(2-vinyl pyridine) brushes as carrier system for silver nanoparticles
Date 08.04.2008

Abstract PMSE 342 - The 235th ACS National Meeting, New Orleans, LA, April 6-10, 2008

Novel metal nanoparticles have shown interesting perspectives in the applications as catalysts, sensors, and optoelectronics, provided these are templated with suitable carrier. Polymer brushes, by virtue of their nanometer dimensions and well-defined structure, offer many advantages as templates for the preparation and application of nanoparticles. We report on the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles on poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) brushes and effect of various reaction parameters on the immobilization process of silver nanoparticles. In-situ synthesis was carried out through reduction of silver nitrate by sodium borohydride and reduction time and AgNO3 concentration were varied to study the effect on immobilization process. Adsorption of silver nanoparticles on the polymer brushes was confirmed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) which shows change in morphology of surface of P2VP brushes after the attachment of silver nanoparticles. It was further supported by appearance of absorption peak, characteristic of silver nanoparticles in UV-VIS spectra of modified brushes.
